Everyone. Please remember that I am asking for birthdays with your choices.

Thanks.

Where is the easiest place to find birthdays for those of us who refuse to use pay sites?

Fangraphs

Fangraphs for MILB players and all others should be on the MLB draft tracker.

You also have the Top 200 on MLB Pipeline that lists birthdates.

Well, the end of the Greg Bird reign of terror at 1B is in sight now thatís Vaughn is in the fold. I hope the White Sox get aggressive and let him see some AA before the season is over.

I don't remember ever seeing a league draft in the exact same order of the draft before in the Top 4.

I'm very happy to land Bleday, and would've been happy with any of the Top 4, which is why I ultimately decided not to trade the pick.

That does seem odd.

You guys should be able to see stuff pop up much quicker on the roster pages too.

Top 6 IRL is the same here, with a swap of Greene and Abrams order.  Now, is where it'll begin to get interesting to see where people go.

In this format, it would be an unmitigated disaster.  No one would ever turn in picks early again, and wait until the last possible second, shopping their picks.

It works well in Troy's league when you're on the clock, but the draft is literally over in 3-4 days.  Imagine 2+ months of everyone shopping their picks while on the clock.

It would be pure torture.

I like Kirby, but I LOVED Luciano.  Dammit!
Title: Re: 2019 Draft Chatter
Post by: JimH on June 10, 2019, 04:22:53 PM
Luciano was #4 overall on my list- I'm shocked he made it this far.  That's the main reason I made the comment about wishing I could trade up a while ago.  I took him in BNSL at #5, although he was still 4th on the list I sent.  Amazing value, even if he hasn't played in a game yet.
Title: Re: 2019 Draft Chatter
Post by: MarlinS on June 10, 2019, 04:28:19 PM
After taking Maitan and Franco in back to back 1st rounds, its pretty much the ONLY reason I passed on Luciano at 4.  Very happy with Bleday there.  But coming back around to my second pick of the round, it always stings one pick ahead of yours.

He was at the top of my list, and I could've easily taken him at 4 as well.

Now, we'll have to see how Kirby translates as a pro, but that 107/6 K/BB rate is super impressive.

Love the Zack Thompson pick at that point Hayes. I don't the subset of people that truly dislike the fact that hew went to the Cards.

That's funny...all three guys just posted were the 3 guys on my list...but in reverse order.

Thrilled to grab a guy with a Cole Hamels comp...that worked out pretty well for Philly last time around!

I'm always interested to see what Jimmy has up his sleeve.

As for the recent picks, I really like the upside of Malone.  High risk/high reward, however.

I know what Jim for some odd reason, thought it would be.  Luciano.

Not sure why he thought that with me picking ahead of him, and already having the market cornered on high profile IFAs.

Then again, I didn't get Luciano either, but I need pitching pretty badly.

Thanks Mickey.  My love of lefty starters is only eclipsed by my love of toolsy teenage short stops.  Luckily for me I was able to secure one of each in the first round this year.

I was high on Thompson but the shoulder issues scared me away

I'd have been more concerned if it was shoulder issues, but it was a balky elbow that held him back in 2018 and he showed no effects of it this year.  If he has TJS he can just join the TJS club I currently have living on my reserve roster.

Yeah his shoulder issues were in high school, now itís the elbow. He was my pick if he had a clean bill of health. Definitely a guy worth watching if he gets with the right training staff

Thought Victor Victor mught last another round on the basis of a slow start.  That is a pick that has the chance to make me jealous later on.

I kept looking at him, but couldn't pull the trigger.  If he doesn't hit, I already have enough above average defensive OFs who lack the stick.
Title: Re: 2019 Draft Chatter
Post by: MarkA on June 12, 2019, 08:56:20 AM
Its not often you get a guy who is already a top 100 prospect in the 2nd round.  Even if he doesn't hit much, with the way DMB values defense he is going to be an asset in a few short years.  Very high floor for this league and good value with that pick.
Title: Re: 2019 Draft Chatter
Post by: MarlinS on June 12, 2019, 09:37:49 AM
I agree to an extent, Mark.  The value was solid, but if he doesn't end up hitting, the 2nd is too high, and he'll drop out of the Top 100 as well.

Pick sent in- Michael Busch, 2B, UNC

Have no idea if he'll stick at 2B, but the bat should play.

That 2B option pushed him up my board also and the Dodgers are one of the more aggressive teams in terms of moving players around.

I'm curious who Mickey thought I was going to pick.

I actually preferred Leiter at 2.02, but he was the top pitcher on my board and I had a group of bats including Busch, so I flipped them knowing I'd still get some kind of bat here.

I gotta make sure I'm never in a position where I don't pick for over two rounds again. This reminds me of my awkward stage as a kid...where all of my friends were having fun dancing at the school dance while I just sat in the back bored and eating the food.

I wasn't expecting to acquire a pair of 3rds at the last minute.  I wasn't even sure if I'd get one of them, but now that I have them I fully expect the next round (1/2 of the 2nd, and 1/2 of the 3rd) to be brutal, as I'm sure many of my targets will disappear.  :)

Anyone going to watch any of the College WS today?

As I mentioned before, I have a buddy who lives just a stone's throw away from Omaha, and he goes to some of the games every year.

I wanted to go this year, but wasn't able to, and of course Michigan actually made it in.

It would've been cool to see, even though I fully admit I follow football and basketball.  Baseball, not so much.

First time they made it to the College WS since Barry Larkin was there.

We should never allow Jim to have so many early round picks.

Bwahahahaha! Actually my only draft prep happened between midnight and 2:00 AM last night because I knew I wouldnít have a chance today. Callihan was the guy, Alcantara was option B and then I had 2 guys that I had to decide between with those guys being gone. In the end, I went upside and took SS Noelvi Marte from the Mariners organization. Probably a little bit of a reach and when Jim takes my other guy in a couple of picks, Iíll be mad at myself, but Marteís ceiling seems very high.

WHY WAS I skipped????  I had until June 18th and yesterday was Father's Day.

I was e-mailed on June 15th (Saturday) at 6:28 p.m. that I was in the next group.  Yesterday was Sunday, so there is no reason why I should be skipped.  We are moving at an incredible pace so there is no reason to be so unreasonable.  We all have a real life and sorry, but I had Father's Day stuff Sat and Sun.  This is getting ridiculous guys.

I emailed with plenty of advance notice. You didn't have to make a pick yesterday or the day before. It just had to be in by 8am this morning. I do my best to let everyone know. More than most other leagues Ive ever been in. I dont ever move the times without a 24 hour window. I am sorry but Fathers Day didn't play into this at all really. This is why its encouraged to send in a list, just in case.

i probably stared at JPM for 1.5-2 rounds.  Just couldn't pull the trigger.  I think his upside is lower than Victor Victor's, and felt there were better options at my picks.  But what the hell do I know?  I could've picked them both, so we'll see who's right.

Title: Re: 2019 Draft Chatter

Absolutely great value, Doc.  Fact is, ALL these picks are lottery tickets, some more than others.  Even guys who are "can't miss," miss all the time, and guys sometimes come out of nowhere, or exceed expectations.

Right now, the feeling is that JPM is 4th OF material, but there will be guys drafted in this draft before him that won't even achieve that.  And what if he puts on some weight, makes an adjustment to his swing, etc?

The fact that I considered him for all my picks (other than #4 overall), shows me that getting him in the mid 3rd is excellent.

I could not decide between Osiel Rodriguez and Richard Gallardo so I took a chance on one or both falling to me at 3.19 and went with the SS from CLE at 3.14 since I wanted an IF with one of the 2 picks and Martinez from TOR had just gone off the board.

I took Giovanny Gallegos - I couldn't find him on the site or on a team and I don't think he has met IP requirements prior to this season.  I don't love drafting RPs, but if I can get one at 140 ERA+ to help me this season, I can't pass on it.

Nice grab.  He's pitching well in RL too

Marchan is a great pick at this point!
I landed Marchan in my other league, and was surprised he lasted until the mid 5th there.

Here, without me having a pick between 6.1 and the 9th round, I knew there was no way I'd get him here, and I need catching in the worst way.

Its a great grab, especially with B-More falling so far behind their actual slot.

Idk when their pick was due, but if they sent in a backup, then Daryl will fix it, and they'll get their backup pick.

If no backup, and past due date, they'll get skipped.

Getting around to posting my draft lol...

1.3 - Andrew Vaughn, 1B, Cal
3.8 - Jeremy De La Rosa, OF, WAS org
3.25 - Yerry Rodriguez, RHP, TEX org
4.1 - Ty Buttrey, RHP, LAA org
5.5 - Alexander Vargas, SS, NYY org
5.8 - Graeme Stinson, LHP, Duke
6.25 - Jasseel De La Cruz, RHP, ATL org
7.3 - Christopher Morel, 3B, CHC org
7.7 - Andy Pages, OF, LAD org
7.12 - Payton Henry, C, MIL org
7.24 - Luis Frias, RHP, ARI org
8.1 - Kevin Ginkel, RHP, ARI org
9.4 - Alexfri Planez, OF, CLE org

I tried to go with a lot more upside this year than normal with the exception of the relievers. I hope De La Rosa can get things turned around or else it'll make me look like even more of an idiot than I already do!

Overall, I'm really satisfied with this draft in that I think it'll help replenish a good chunk of the depth I traded away.

5 : Liover Peguero, SS, ARI
6 : Giovanny Gallegos, RHP, STL

My drafts tend to be SS heavy.  I worked to spread my attention out a little more this draft as I looked to shore up my pitching reserves.  I managed to restrict myself to drafting a shortstop only with my first and last picks of the draft.  I did sneak a CF in there and what draft of mine would be complete without a couple of catchers.  I have now drafted 5 catchers in 3 years and will still likely be searching for a catcher in FA this off-season.  I did accomplish my goal of adding to my pitching depth.  It is a blend of near-MLB ready and still not old enough to vote.  As always it skews more to southpaws.  Overall I'm pretty happy with how this draft played out.  It won't have the instant gratification that I got from last year's draft when my first 3 picks made the Top 100 and Caleb Ferguson pitched well enough to be my sim ace this season, but Abrams is doing everything he can to catch this group up.

1.05   CJ Abrams SS
1.25   Zack Thompson LHP
2.05   Diego Cartaya C
3.05   Misael Urbina OF
3.09   Aaron Ashby LHP
4.28   Jose Luis Urquidy RHP
7.01   John Rooney LHP
7.08   Eric Haase C
9.02   Sandy Gaston RHP
10.07 Ben Brecht LHP
10.26 Tanner Morris SS

Well, I only had 7 picks and six of them were at 8.25 or later. Considering that, Iím actually really pleased with what I came away with:

2.25- Noelvi Marte, SS, SEA org., 10-16-01
8.25- Wilmin Candelario, SS, KC org., 9-11-01
8.27- Mauricio Llovera, RHP, PHI org., 4-17-96
9.7- Keithron Moss, 2B, TEX org., 8-20-01
9.25- Alexander Ramirez, OF, LAA org., 8-29-02
10.22- Patrick Hilson, OF, SF org., 8-25-00
10.25- Carlos Guzman, RHP, DET org., 5-16-98

Almost every pick was an upside swing and I actually didnít end up taking a single 2019 draftee somehow, but I think a few of these guys will end up turning into something really solid.

3.1: Tommy Edman, IF, STL org.
3.3: Matt Wallner, OF, Southern Mississippi
5.26: Carter Bins, C, Fresno State
6.7: Edouard Julien, 2B, Auburn
8.2: Colin Barber, OF, HS
8.9: Tony Locey, RHP, Georgia

Reds 2019 draft:

1.29 - Michael Toglia, 1B
2.29 - Trejyn Fletcher, CF
4.28 - Will Holland, SS
7.29 - Jose de la Cruz, OF
8.29 - Myles Austin, SS
9.29 - Otto Lopez, SS
10.29 - Cade Doughty, SS

Definitely focused on not only hitters, but hitters that play up the middle defensively. Besides Toglia, who I think will be a monster bat in Coors Field, all of my guys are "athletic" types who should be able to move around the diamond. I have low-floor, high-ceiling types in Fletcher, Holland, de la Cruz, Austin, and Doughty, which is a type of player I rarely draft. I only took one guy that I normally take, the "high floor, low ceiling" type of safe pick in Lopez, though of course, there are no safe bets when it comes to prospects.

Mariners 2019 draft

Well I like this draft but I think I may have reached on my first pick. Not having a pick till the 4th really stinks. I was glad that it happened in this draft as it felt like a weak draft. Two things I realized is that we have a ton of smart GMs and there still is a ton of talent on minor league rosters. I know I could have gone another 5 rounds easily. Starting a rebuild smack in the middle of the draft changed things for me a little. I wanted to try to focus on higher floor guys and some guys that would help me sooner than later because FA hasn't seemed to work well for me and I needed some gas who will get projections next year and allow me to be more prudent with any FA signings. Also I am up against the roster max and 40 man so that was a consideration as well.

4.02 Joshua Mears, OF
5.02 Caleb Smith, SP
5.03 Kyle McCann, C
6.12 Ji-Hwan Bae, SS
7.14 Zack Short, SS
7.21 Paul Richan, SP
7.23 Joel Kuhnel, RP
9.21 Conner Menez, SP
10.02 Juan Then, SP
10.05 Tren Giambrone, IF
10.19 Chadwick Tromp, C
10.27 Packy Naughton, SP

Caleb Smith and Conner Menez could both plug into my rotation next year. Richan and Naughton shouldn't be too far behind. Kuhnel is a future closer in the making and should also get a useable projection next year. I have long been a fan of Tromp and was excited to see him bounce back after injury and is forcing AAA pitching right now. I love Bae's ceiling as well as offensive minded infielders, Giambrone and Short. Then is a boom or bust type.

I think I got a lot of good value with this draft and some useable pieces that will have solid projections as early as next year.

Something is clearly wrong when I draft as many Cubs as Reds.
